ELK COUNTY - State Parks across the country are offering free guided hikes on New Year's Day.

In Pennsylvania, 19 parks are participating. They say it is a way to promote what the parks have to offer while offering a healthy activity for kicking off the New Year. In all, in 2013, hundreds of people across PA participated.

Here are some of the parks that offered events:

Canoe Creek State Park – The park is combining their First Day Hike with their Winterfest. Winterfest includes refreshments around the fire beginning at 1:00 p.m. followed by the First Day Hike beginning at 2:00 p.m. They are also expecting to be able to have the sledding hill open.

Black Moshannon State Park – The First Day Hike starts at 1:00 p.m. and will last until 2:00 p.m. Meet at Boat Launch #3 on West Side Road. A limited number of snow shoes available for use.

Bald Eagle State Park – The First Day Hike lasts from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. and leaves from the Environmental Learning Center.

Parker Dam - Hike begins at 2:00. Meet at the park office.

They plan to host the hikes again next year.
