Funding granted for repairs in Ridgway, three years after flooding

Ridgway, Elk County, Pa. - More than three years after floodwaters surged through the streets of Ridgway, the borough will be receiving some federal funding to make repairs.

"I remember that it came up faster than anything we've ever seen before," says Ridgway Borough manager Paul McCurdy.

Floodwaters completely destroyed homes and businesses along main street in Ridgway during the flood of may 2014. Napa auto parts was one of the worst hit.

"The water was coming in, it raised a foot in like 20 minutes," remembers Napa employee Justin Darr.

The marking on the wall still serves as a constant reminder of how high the water was that day. Darr remembers how fast water rose. Darr says it was a scary sight walking through the water. "It was probably waist deep when we left. We did lose a lot and we're lucky still to be open."

However, some businesses weren't so lucky. Borough officials say the area is still recovering. Now, federal funding has finally come in.

"I think we were all disappointed it has taken as long as it did," says McCurdy.

The $663,991 Army Corps Of Engineers project will focus on the area around Elk Creek. It will re-install a retaining wall and repair access ramps. However, it will not add any more flooding precautions.

"In the event that we have exactly the same storm and weather conditions and so on we will get the same result," says McCurdy/

The borough manager says he's pushing for better flood measures be taken in other areas around town.

Meanwhile, the guys at Napa are taking matters into their own hands. "We try not to stack stuff too low so something like that happens again god forbid it does we have a better handle on it," says Darr.

Construction is expected to be completed by November 24, 2018.
