Police surrounded a home off of Cooks Hill Road Friday morning. It's located south of Hyndman in Bedford County in Londonderry Township. That’s just a few miles from the Maryland border.
State police and emergency responders were there most of the day. A woman called police saying she fled the home after 51-year-old Richard Mauzy threatened her and fired several shots from a gun. That happened around 9:30 Friday morning.
Several state troopers arrived and when he refused to come out they activated their special emergency response team. Police believed Mauzy was highly intoxicated and armed with several weapons.
Dozens of officers in full gear set up a perimeter and tried multiple times throughout the day to convince him to surrender. Police say he fired another shot inside the house around mid-afternoon and then had little contact with him for the next few hours.
Sometime between 6:00 and 7:00, the SERT team determined it could move in by using a relatively new piece of equipment that looks like an armored bulldozer called a rook. Police say the 51-year-old had a gun within reach when they tased him and arrested him.
Mauzy was taken to UPMC Bedford and faces charges of making terroristic threats.
