Coroner on scene of death investigation

East Taylor Township, Cambria County, Pa - The coroner has identified the victim whose body was found off of Riders Road, East Taylor Township, Cambria County early Thursday morning.

The coroner identified the victim as 58-year-old Geraldo Lopez of Johnstown.

Investigators said two Jigging Technologies, LLC. employees found the body around 8:40 a.m. near an active surface mining work site.

State and local police from East Taylor Township, East Conemaugh Borough and Cambria County detectives were on the scene collecting evidence.

The coroner said Lopez was released from the hospital for medical treatment on October 12th. He was reported missing by his family on October 14th.

Investigators are calling the death suspicious because it is unclear how and why Lopez ended up in such a remote area.

"So that remains a mystery at this point. There were no visible signs of trauma," said Jeff Lees, Cambria County Coroner.

The cause of Lopez' death is still under investigation while the coroner's office waits for toxicology results.

Assistant District Attorney Arnold Bernard said although investigators are labeling the death as "suspicious," they are still trying to determine what led to the man's death.

"Well, certainly the location of where the body was found is being taken into consideration. It is a very remote area. As far as what that means, in terms of whether or not there was foul play or whether or not this person found his way out here on his own, that remains to be seen," said Arnold Bernard, a Cambria County assistant district attorney.

Investigators said they are also looking at surveillance video from the area.
