The construction will take place on College Avenue between Heister and Atherton Streets. One lane of College Avenue is expected to be closed Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to five p.m., weather dependent.
The construction is part of a six-year project by the borough's water authority. Work to replace the water lines from Atherton Street to Corl Street and on Beaver Avenue has already taken place.
The current lines underground are four and six inches wide, which water authority officials say is too small. They're replacing that structure with a 12 inch wide cement line.
Officials said the new lines will help with fire protection in the area, as more water will be able to pass through the pipes in case of an emergency.
"We certainly understand that traffic has to keep moving," State College Borough Water Authority Executive Director John Lichman said. "Our primary concern is to, of course, install the lines safely and keep the workers safe and the public safe."
Downtown parking should not be affected by the project. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of August.
