State Representative Scott Conklin, (D) 77th District, announced Thursday he will introduce the new legislation in the coming weeks.
The bill will add a severance tax for natural gas companies that will go directly to the LIHEAP program.
Conklin says he's received several calls in the past few weeks from folks in Centre County who are struggling to pay for their heating bills. He says the legislation will enact the severance fee on natural gas companies, but the money will go right back to the gas companies as people continue to pay for gas to heat their homes.
"We're the only major gas producers that doesn't have a small severance fee. I'm not talking 9%, 10%, I'm talking just small percentages, not just going to the general fund, but small percentages that are actually used for dedicated purposes," Conklin said. "It goes directly back to the gas companies. It's almost a no-brainer when you think about it."
Conklin also announced he will run for re-election.
