ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – Retired Marine Colonel Gerald Russell will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday.

Russell died in late February at age 97 in State College. After serving 30 years in the Marine Corps, Russell became an associate dean at Penn State.

Russell went on to have a major impact on numerous charities and community organizations in Centre County.

Fellow Korean War veteran Herb Wong found it was Russell who sent reinforcements in when Wong’s life was in danger. He along with many State College friends are in Arlington for today’s ceremony.

“I feel like I owe that to him,” said Wong. “We were good friends, I want to pay tribute to him.”

WTAJ News Reporter Mallory Lane is in Arlington and will have more coverage on the memorial service for one of the highest-decorated Marines in World War II. She will have more coverage Wednesday evening beginning at 5.
