Centre County DA says an important lesson stems from murder case

Bellefonte, Centre County, Pa. - Following the guilty plea of Charles McGhee, Centre County District Attorney, Bernie Cantorna,  said the issue stemming from his case is far from over.

Cantorna said this may be the most gruesome case he's ever seen.

McGhee pleaded guilty to first degree murder and arson for beating his wife, Courtney, to death in the basement of their Bellefonte home back in June.

He then set three separate fires to cover up the crime while his daughter was inside.

According to court documents, the couple had a history of marital issues.

And neighbors said just a day before her death, Courtney was prepared for a divorce.

Cantorna said this case highlights how crucial it is for anyone in an abusive relationship to seek professional guidance before it's too late.

"Within 24 hours of Courtney telling her husband she was leaving, she was dead. She thought she should be concerned, her family was concerned. Victims of abuse need to know that if you think you might be in danger, you are," Cantorna said.

McGhee will spend a lifetime behind bars with no parole.

And Cantorna said this outcome is a reminder that domestic abuse will never be tolerated.

But more importantly,  that for victims the resources are available.
