Centre County DA refiles charges against Beta Theta Pi brothers

Centre County, Pa. - The Centre County District Attorney has refiled charges against several brothers of Beta Theta Pi in connection to the death of Beta Theta Pi pledge Timothy Piazza.

District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller refiled charges against 11 brothers, with eight facing involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and simple assault charges.

About two months ago, Judge Allen Sinclair threw out all felony charges after a preliminary hearing that lasted over a span of several months.

The judge did not carry over all counts of hazing and reckless endangerment from the preliminary hearing, and some of those were refiled Friday.

All of the charges stem from events leading up to Piazza's death during a hazing incident called the “Gauntlet” earlier this year.

The district attorney is expected to request another judge to oversee a new hearing. No date for the preliminary hearing has been set.

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi was also in court today defending their use of the fraternity house on football weekends. A judge has yet to rule on this case.
