More than 3.7 million Graco car seats are covered by the action. These seats have been sold at a number of national retailers with stores in this region including Toys 'R Us, Target and Wal-mart. That's why plenty of local parents are advised to check their car seats to find out if they have been recalled.
This recall is a voluntary action on the part of Graco children's products. The company is recalling eleven out of the eighteen models it manufactured between 2009 and 2013. The move was prompted by complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that once kids are buckled into these seats, it can be difficult to get them out.
"The problem seems to be with the harness retainer clip. That actually attaches the child seat belt to the actual child restraint. And some of the restraints are difficult or they seem to get stuck in their latched position."
Some people in this region who own one of the seats covered by the recall say they have noticed a problem with the buckle on these safety seats.
"You have to push really hard on the buckle to get, to get the strap off. You have to push it in really hard and then pull to get the straps out."
The manufacturer blames the problem on the possibility that food or dried liquids can make the harness buckles more difficult to open over time. Regulators say that could make it hard to get a child out of the seat quickly in case of an emergency. Other parents aware of the recall say they just want to make sure their children are safe.
"Well I think it is a big concern. But I think they are just making sure that their products are operating as they need to."
The company is drawing up plans to provide replacement harness buckles at no cost to all of the car seat owners covered by the recall. The recalled Graco models include: the Cozy Cline, Comfort Sport, Classic Ride 50, My Ride 65, My Ride 65 with Safety Surround, My Ride 70, Size4Me 70, My Size 70, Head Wise 70 and Smart Seat, The Nautilus 3-in-1, Nautilus Elite and Argos.
Owners of the seats can contact Graco at 1-800-345-4109 or on line at email@example.com.
