“We have no choice except leave the children home alone,” said Carolyn Sprout, who has two children attending schools in Bellefonte. “We’ve been denied transportation to and from this daycare facility.”
Sprout and her husband send their children to Kidz Konnection daycare a few miles down the road from where they attend school at Marion-Walker elementary.
Daycare owner Staci Redman said the school districte is only giving 36 of her students the option of being bused directly to the daycare after school. According to Redman, the daycare currently has 50 students enrolled.
“We’re having difficulty making sure every student has a spot on the bus,” she said.
Bellefonte School Board President Becky Rock told WTAJ the school district has not denied any students bus transportation, but acknowledged that because of logistics, some children may not be able to be bused to their after-school daycares.
“The board revised and adopted the transportation policy in July of 2012,” she wrote in an email to WTAJ. “And the board expects our staff to follow this policy as it was adopted…We transport 2,400 students safely every school day and the changes we made to our transportation policy were made for safety reasons.”
Carolyn Sprout said she’s still hoping to work with the school-board on a solution.
