American Legion Post bans NFL games Sunday

Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa. - An American Legion in our region banned National Football League games from theis establishment Sunday.

All of the seats were taken at the bar at Richland American Legion Post 849, despite all NFL games being banned from the TVs for the day.

"Very much against these overly high priced football players taking a knee during the national anthem and presentation of the flag," said post chaplan Bob Statler.

The Richland American Legion decided to ban the games out of respect to the flag and all who served.

Senior Vice Commander Ray Haberkorn says he was upset when players knelt during last week's football game. He noted few players remained on their feet with hands across their hearts.

"His parents brought him up right to respect the flag and respect the country," said Haberkorn.

Bob Statler says football players can protest, but it shouldnt done during the national anthem.

"There's a black monument down in Washington DC that has 59,000 names on it of people that wish they could take a knee, there's thousands of men and women running around the United States with artifical limbs that wish they could take a knee."

We asked if the American Legion planned to continue the ban.

"As it stands right now it's today and we have a meeting coming up on Tuesday and we'll make more decisions on it then," expained Haberkorn.
