ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - A local police officer is charged with Aggravated Assault, but his lawyers thinks those charges should be dropped. And the city where he works is withholding judgment till they get all the facts.

Hanover Township Police charged Altoona Police Officer Matthew Plummer with Aggravated Assault after he punched a man after a concert. His lawyer Steve Passarello says that's all true, but there's more to it. He says Plummer was acting in self defense.

Passarello says two guys in a pickup truck threw a beer bottle at the bus Plummer was in and broke the window then harassed the 51 year old bus driver, and Plummer intervened on the bus driver's behalf.

Altoona City Councilman Michael Haire read a statement from the city. He said they’re aware of the situation and Mathew Plummer has been assigned to desk duty throughout the duration of the investigation and once the investigation has come to a conclusion if criminal charges are pressed they will take appropriate action.

Now Passarello says his client is waiting and hoping those charges will be dropped or dismissed. He says Plummer is nervous and upset about the situation and worried for his job and family.

Plummer is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 26th in Washington County.
