UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - The final whistle has blown and the 2014 Special Olympics are officially in the books.

Closing ceremonies wrapped up the celebration Saturday evening. About 2,300 athletes from across the state came to State College to take part in the games, but it couldn't be done without the volunteers. About 1,600 of them a day pitch in to make sure the games go off without a hitch. Once again this year's event was a big success.

"We had more athletes this year than we've had in the past and we have great support here in the community and great facilities at Penn State and Northland Bowl that allow all the kids to come here each year," Event Director Ed Gannon says.

This was the 45th year for the Special Olympics in Pennsylvania.
