HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA - Governor Tom Corbett today requested  a waiver from a federal requirement that the state expand its Medicaid program.
Instead the governor is asking federal approval to implement his Healthy Pennsylvania Plan. His alternative to Medicaid expansion calls for federal money to be used to buy private health coverage for low-income residents, instead of putting them on the regular Medicaid program. It also proposes co-pays and a work search from some recipients.
The administration says the Healthy Pa alternative would increase access to healthcare for  500,000 state residents. Medicaid accounts for 27 percent of the state's general fund budget.
