HARRISBURG - New guidelines could affect  the type of medication you can get in the emergency room. State health officials have announced the adoption of new guidelines for pain treatment in hospital emergency rooms.

They call on ER doctors to limit pain prescriptions to 7 days, to consider non-opioid medications, if they do prescribe opioids to choose the lowest potency, and  that detoxification be encouraged for people whose behavior may indicate addiction.

The State Departments of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Health and the Pennsylvania Medical Society collaborated on the guidelines and say they'll continue to update them.
