British surgeons have for the first time implanted a hip joint made on a 3D printer and held it in place with the patient's own stem cells. Meryl Richards has had three previous hip replacements before the 3D surgery.
Layer by layer, a 3D printer built up a custom made hip implant from powdered titanium, based on scans from Meryl's existing hips. Doctors say the surgery was a success and hope Meryl will eventually walk without a limp.
The 3-D printer hip implant cost about $20,000, almost ten times the amount of a regular joint replacement in Britain, but the price is expected to drop as 3D printing becomes more common.
