As we approach the Memorial Day holiday, you may be planning a barbeque and if you're trying to not completely blow your diet, we may have some tips for you.
To keep the the calorie count down, you can start by not limiting your grill choices to meat. Marinate vegetables in balsamic vinegar and olive oil, and throw them on the grill.
Chicken is a great option, too, but the grilling method can be as important as food choice. Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D., Cleveland Clinic says, "studies have shown that if you add herbs such as rosemary and thyme to your marinade before you grill, it actually reduces those HCA carbons that we know increase cancer."
HCAs show up in the burnt areas of grilled food, so if you don't marinate, try to remove all charred and burnt pieces.
If you are going to go with the typical meats, like burgers and hot dogs, look for other ways to drive up the nutrients. Choose a whole wheat bun and load your burger with veggies.
