The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending delaying the start of the school day for middle school and high school students to 8:30 a.m or later. The group says starting school later would help adolescents and teens with their lack of sleep, which studies show is linked to poor health, depression, poor grades, and car accidents.
Middle school and high school students need about 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep a day and most don't get that amount. It's estimated that more than 40 percent of public high schools in the US start classes before 8 a.m.
