In this week’s Life & Health segment, Kristina Taylor-Porter, the Executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Center, stopped by to talk about the new center and the services it provides to our region.
According to Taylor-Porter, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), is a “child-centered approach to support children who have been abused or neglected, or witnessed abuse, and help them recover from such physical and emotional tragedy.”
Prior to the center, children had to travel between offices for specialized care, exams and interviews.  The CAC reduces the number of visits to one central location, which provides all of those services.  Taylor-Porter says it is a “safe, child and family-friendly space, where kids come on a non-emergent basis for evaluation and treatment of abuse.  This building is one place where all the parties looking out for the welfare of the child come to the child.”
The center includes a medical exam room, two forensic interview rooms with adjoining observation rooms, and a multidisciplinary investigative team room.
The Advisory Board for the Children’s Advocacy Center includes Centre County Judge Brad Lunsford, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller, Children and Youth Services Director Julia Sprinkle, Dawn McKee from the Women’s Resource Center, along with many others.
The CAC is located on Medical Park Lane in Bellfonte, PA.  It is directly connected to Mount Nittany Health’s newly renovated pediatrics practice.  Taylor-Porter says pediatricians Dr. Craig Collison, Dr. Rachel Schwab and Dr. Kristie Kaufman were also given special training to allow them to perform the children’s medical examinations at the Children’s Advocacy Center.
