May is National Burger Month! On today's show, Dawn and guest co-host KC O'Day from WALY 103.9 FM celebrate by making some unusual hamburger recipes!

DAWN'S BURGER RECIPES:

CRUNCHY TACO BURGER (based on McCormick Cheesy Taco Burger Recipe)
Delicious hamburgers infused with taco seasoning and crushed tortilla chips. Top with taco fixins like: melted taco cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and tomato.


INGREGIENTS:
4 hamburger buns of your choice
1 lb lean ground beef
2 large handfuls of plain tortilla chips (crushed)
1 cup of taco seasoning (your favorite brand)  Set rest of cheese aside for topping burgers later.
1 1/2 cup of shredded taco cheese
1 egg
1/4 cup of water
Salt and pepper

Preparation
1. Mix ground beef, taco seasoning, 1 cup of shredded cheese, 1 egg and crushed tortilla chips and water in a bowl.
2. Take about a handful out at a time and form it into patties
3. Preheat a lightly oiled grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Grill or fry burgers for about 8 minutes on each side or until they are completely cooked through (no pink).
4. Transfer burgers onto buns and top with optional condiments: Salsa, Taco Sauce, Salsa, Sour Cream, Guacamole, Nacho Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato. Enjoy!

GRAPE JELLY BURGER WITH CARMELIZED ONIONS AND A KICK! (based on Welch's Grape Jelly Burger Recipe)
4 hamburger buns of your choice
1 lb lean ground beef
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion, thinly sliced
3 sprigs thyme or a pinch of thyme leaves
1 pinch dried red pepper flakes
3 tbsp Grape Jelly
¼ cup low-sodium chicken stock or water
Salt and pepper


Preparation
1. Heat extra virgin olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add in the onion and cook low for about 20 to 25 minutes. Once the onions are very soft, stir in thyme, chili flakes, jelly, water or chicken stock and salt and pepper. (set aside)
2. Preheat a lightly oiled grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Grill or fry burgers for about 8 minutes on each side or until they are completely cooked through (no pink).
3. Transfer burgers into the pan that has the carmelized onions, grape jelly, red pepper flakes and thyme in it.  Continue to cook for another 15 minutes or until liquid has nearly evaporated.
4. Put cooked burgers on top of bun bottom and put a spoonful or more of the caramelized onions, grape jelly, red pepper and thyme mixture on top of each burger. Finish by putting bun top on burger. Enjoy!
